Procrastination At It’s Best!

Some weekends are slated for play and some for work.  This weekend was booked solid  with work.  A magazine photo submission due on Monday and an article to write, that also needs photos, that’s due on the first,  left no room for play.  I made room anyway.  There are just some weekends where the need...

Simon - I’m really glad you skipped work, lovely shots, amazing that you can see so much exotic wildlife nearby.March 28, 2011 – 3:02 am

LME - Thanks Simon! I really am fortunate. I live in the most densely populated county in the state but a relatively short drive still takes me to places like the Hillsboro River where I can experience the beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife. It amazes me this portion of the river has been (mostly) spared (for now) considering the surrounding and approaching development.March 28, 2011 – 2:11 pm

Robin - If this is what you do when you are supposed to be working, then take off more often.Love all the picsJuly 20, 2011 – 7:29 pm

Another Fantastic Weekend!

This past weekend, we headed over to Merritt Island, near Kennedy Space Center on Florida’s east coast.  This is always a great time of year for viewing birds there (lots of ducks!).  I’m not much of a photographer when it comes to photographing birds.  There are those who specialize in it and they do some...

Bond Blackwell - Spectacular photos Laurie!!
The lighting in all of them is just divine and of course your compositions are so wonderful. The seventh one down is just so pleasing to me. Everything about it, the sharpness of the plants in the foreground contradicting the softness of the grass in the mid and the verticals of the background…they just all turn me on.
Fantastic work!!!February 15, 2011 – 4:33 am

Knicki - Scrub jays are endangered? Fantastic photos as usual. Love the bobcat!February 15, 2011 – 10:13 pm

LME - Thanks Bond! I’m glad you like the 7th image. I was partial to it but wasn’t sure how it would be received.

Thanks Knicki, You’re probably thinking of the Western Scrub Jay…different bird. Technically, the Florida Scrub Jay is listed as “Threatened”. The Florida Scrub Jay lives only in the dwindling scrub habitat of Florida. I believe I read there are fewer than 6000 individuals in the wild. For such a bold bird, they’re rather picky about where they live and under what circumstances they’ll disperse. Not only do they need scrub habitat but that habitat needs to burn approximately every 10 years or their nests fail.February 16, 2011 – 1:55 am

Photography Annual / Gallery at Rookery Bay

If anyone is going to be in the Naples area on February 3rd, you should think about attending the opening reception for the PhotographyAnnual at Rookery Bay.  It’s cosponsored by the United Arts Council of Collier County.  One of my wave images will be exhibited along with the work of some other fabulous photographers.  The...

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve

For our year-end trip, I chose to spend time exploring some of Florida’s lesser-known ecosystems, specifically scrub habitat along the Lake Wales Ridge and dry prairie at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve.  Once dominant ecosystems in the center of the state, they have been reduced to disconnected remnants. I’ll be posting a few blog entries describing the...

Simon - Beautiful shots! I once went to Florida in a cold spell, but not 20 degrees cold, I didn’t know it could get that cold down there.January 6, 2011 – 5:06 am

LME - Thanks Simon. It’s certainly not that common for it to get that cold here. The night before we arrived at the prairie, the low was 17 degrees…cold by anyone’s standards. By our third day, it was back to shorts and t-short weather.January 6, 2011 – 10:13 am

Donna Bollenbach - I was just at the prairie for New Year’s. My husband and I visit a couple times a year. We took a long hike to gum slough and the footbridge (in the five mile slough hammock. I love the frost in these images. You can feel the cold. Great representations of a beautiful Florida treasure.

Simon - Now you’ve got to do a book! Rare ferrets and mad donkeys as well…I love the sheep grazing shot with the amazing backdrop. You’ve really made me want to go there one day, it’s a unique looking place, you should get the state tourist board to sponsor you!October 10, 2010 – 4:37 am
