Another Fabulous Morning On The Hillsborough River

Another fantastic morning spent paddling on the Hillsborough River! We got an early start. The light was dim.  The air temperature was a chilly 44 degrees (F).  There was a light mist rising off the surface of the water.  Within the first few minutes on the river, we came across this trio, looking for breakfast...

Corkscrew Swamp, Fakahatchee Strand, and the Loxahatchee River

For us,  no trip to South Florida is complete without a visit to Corkscrew Swamp and Fakahatchee Strand. Audubon’s approximately 13,000 acre Corkscrew Swamp Preserve, near Naples is an absolutely amazing place.   The preserve is home to the largest remaining old growth Bald Cypress stand in North America.  It also hosts the largest nesting...

Big Sur

The last leg of our recent trip to California was spent along the Big Sur coast line.  When the fog cleared enough to see it (a rare occurrence during our brief stay) the coast line was simply breathtaking.  From the big scene to the small scene, it was a feast for the eyes, and the...

A Florida “Staycation”

One of the great things about living in Florida is you don’t have to go very far to be “on vacation”.  Last weekend was no exception.  We took our little mini-vacation along Florida’s Nature Coast, just an hour and half drive north of St. Pete. (Florida’s Sun Coast). Friday morning, despite the threat of rain,...

Terry - Hi Laurie!

Thanks for sharing the link to your blog – Sounds (and looks) like it a was a wonderful vacation. Your photos are always amazing! Roy & I spent our honeymoon canoeing around the Florida springs – a beautiful area! But even then (28 years ago), I remember the same feeling you described of being jolted by the sudden appearance of manicured lawns & McMansions. I can’t remember which river it was on, but one day we paddled by an alligator that was about 10 feet long, and Roy was absolutely convincecd it was a “prop” put there by the paddle company (like Disneyland). However, growing up in Hilton Head and quite familiar with gators, I knew it was the real thing. We paddled quietly by and the alligator never even twitched. He was probably used to paddlers floating by every few minutes.

Roy is coming to Florida for a weekend in November to jury an art festival organized by alumna Jenni MacInnes Coolidge (Mus. of Florida Art). Initially I was planning to come with him and make a mini vacation out of it, but about a week later, Roy was invited to be a visiting artist in Hawaii for a week, so I decided to make it a BIG vacation and go there instead! We’ve never been to HI so we’re really looking forward to it.

All my best to you! Keep up the good work!

LME - Thanks Terry! I don’t blame you re: the trip to Hawaii! I’ve never been either and it’s on my list. When in November will Roy be here? I might have to swing by Deland for a visit and to check out the Festival.July 11, 2011 – 8:45 pm

Weekends!

I love weekends!  Even though I typically do a lot of work during the weekend, there’s still something wonderful about them.  Everyone seems more relaxed.  The pace seems to slow down.  Even disappointments aren’t as disappointing.  This past weekend was no exception Friday evening was spent waist deep in the warm surf photographing waves.  The...

Cayce Elms - Lovely images…I love following your explorations and the wonderful moments you capture. do you use a tripod when you’re taking photos of the waves? It seems to me you use a slow shutter speed to get the gorgeous flow in the water…I would love to know :) Living on the East coast but further north than you (Boston).June 28, 2011 – 7:47 am
