Hot off the press is the latest Puppies USA issue. In it you will find an article I wrote on photographing puppies. The article offers tips on composition, dealing with light, and dealing with the unique challenges of photographing puppies. Of course, the information is applicable to photographing dogs of any age. Because I’m a firm believer that a picture is worth 1000 words (and I was limited to roughly 1200 actual words) the article includes many images that illustrate the results of bad, better, and best technique. Pick up a copy, read the article, and go make some great photos of your dogs!

________________

I also recently wrote an online course for Dog Channel’s Dog College. This was the second course I’ve written on photographing pets. This more advanced course teaches basic concepts of lighting, setting proper white balance, and understanding exposure. I don’t have a screen grab of the course but here are a few photos used to illustrate lessons.

________________

The latest Bully Breed Training Issue, part of the Popular Dog Series was recently published. There were quite a few LMEimages included. Here are some of the images. Thanks again to all who participated in shoots for the issue. I hope you had as much fun as I had! A special thanks to Jeanette and Diablos Bullies.

________________

Also part of the Popular Dogs Series is the Pug issue that was just published. LMEimages is well represented thanks to all the great dogs and people who helped with the shoot! Here are some of the images included in the issue.

Today, I received my copy of Training Secrets for Pit Bulls, the latest issue published by Popular Dogs. The issue is chock full of LMEimages. Just some of the images in the issue are included above. It was so nice to see some of my favorite pet and human models included in the issue. Thanks again to Kaymie and Maverick who appear numerous times in the issue. Thanks too to Jeanette whose fantastic dogs always make the cut, to Shannon, Liz and Hubert, Jessic and Dime, and of course Sarah (who is holding a young Pit Bull that found a home through our clinic adoption center). I can’t forget Gary who isn’t pictured but did a great job assisting. Keep your eyes out for issues which should be on the stands at most large pet stores. There are a lot of great training articles, applicable to most breeds.

I’m still working through the images I made on a recent trip to Colorado. Here’s the next installment.

Just outside Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is Gunnison Conservation Area. It falls under the Bureau of Land Management and appears to be largely ignored in favor of it’s National Park neighbor. The badlands area was a feast for a photographer’s eyes….all the color, form, texture, etc., especially under ideal light (mostly overcast late day light). It was a little depressing seeing the tracks of ORVs all over the place. However, it does seem there’s an effort to limit ORV use to specified areas, at least by signage and some fencing. I’m not sure if there’s any real enforcement. During bright daylight hours, the area just appears as gray mounds, not enticing for the average park visitor and possibly viewed as “bad land” by those who just don’t get it. I hope the area is ultimately saved from weekend warriors on their noisy and destructive ORVs.

One of the many great things about National Parks is they are typically surrounded or adjoin other public land (National Forests or Preserves, State Parks, Conservation Areas, Wildlife Reguges, etc.). Most visitors stick to the National Parks and completely overlook the surrounding areas. The visitor “in the know” will make it a point to look beyond the park boundary and spend some time in these much less crowded but often equally enchanting landscapes.

My copy of the Bulldog Puppy issue just arrived today. I was so pleased to finally see the issue. I had an especially fun time shooting for this one. The puppies were absolutely adorable. My thanks to Ryan for bringing them in! Not only do Ryan’s pups grace the cover, they are plastered throughout the issue. Otis, one of my very favorite dog models also made an appearance. I’ll be doing a portrait session with him at the beach in the next week or two! The icing on the cake was seeing how Nikon, my very own canine assistant and model, is earning his keep with a double truck (two page spread).

I’ve been back from our Colorado trip for about a week but haven’t had a chance to edit the images from the trip. There is always so much catching up to do after a vacation. I’ll be posting photos from the trip soon (Colorado is incredibly beautiful). In the meantime, I thought I’d post some other recent images.

Last night we celebrated two family birthdays. Nikon had a chance to play with his new cousin Mare. The two of them played non-stop for hours. They provided the entertainment for the evening.

Nikon also managed some time with the guys watching the football game. The verdict is out on whether or not he was happy with the birthday hat.

I recently shot a submission for a Popular Dogs magazine issue on Huskies. I had a great time with these dogs. They are simply beautiful! My thanks to all the wonderful Husky models who posed for me.

This one might be my favorite. I love the dog sneaking into the frame on the left.

After regular studio portrait sessions, I often take advantage of having everything set up to do some personal work. After the recent session with Dollar (the beautiful Husky above), We decided to shoot a few photos of a little rescue kitten being fostered by my assistant Sarah. He’s was still being bottle fed when we made this photo, as evidenced by the dried milk around his mouth.

I also took advantage of the opportunity to photograph Sarah. She had been telling me how awful she looks in photos. I thought I’d prove her wrong.

Back in February, I did a post about two little Chihuahua puppies that became part of the family (click here to read the post). They’re a true rags to riches story. They began life in the horrible conditions of a puppy mill. They were lucky enough to find their way, across several states, to SPCA Tampa Bay (a fantastic shelter staffed by the most remarkable and caring people). From there, they were adopted by the world’s best parents (OK…so I might be a little biased), and managed to get their mugs on not one but two magazine covers before they were even 10 weeks old. How’s that for a happy ending? Of course, for them it’s just the beginning!

There will be a lot more photos of these two divas to come.

The editor is sending out my copies of the issues. Can’t wait to see them! The Boxer pup on the left was one of a litter I shot last year. They were so dang cute! That’s Liza on the right. She’s adorable and spoiled rotten by her wonderful parents, Theresa and Dan.

He’s so stinkin’ cute! Here he is on the cover of the latest Puppy Care Basics issue from the folks at Bowtie/Popular Dogs. It’s a great issue with lots of information, including an article by my other half, Dr. David Elmer (Dr. Dave). Yes, that’s Otis again hamming it up at the food bowl. Also just released is the Puppy Training Basics issue which also sports a number of LMEimages. Keep an eye out for them on the news stands!

A while back, one of the editors at Bowtie contacted me to find out if my husband David, a veterinarian, would be interested in writing a column for the Dogs For Kids magazine. It’s a bi-monthly publication packed full of doggie info and geared towards a younger audience. We’ve completed two of the articles so far and the first was just published. It’s been great fun collaborating on this joint project with my husband. It’s a shame we can’t seem to find the same level of enthusiasm when it comes to home improvement projects!

The first article is on nutrition. The next will is on vaccines. Here’s the first article with our joint by-line. By the way, if you scroll down to the 12/15/2008 blog entry, you’ll see an “out-take” from the photo session for this article.

I just received my comp copies of Dog World Magazine’s February 2009 issue. For the issue, I was asked to write an article on photographing pets with digital point and shoot cameras. It was a great exercise for me to write the article as my clients are always asking me how they can achieve better pet photos with their own cameras. The truth is, it’s not the camera that dictates the quality of the photo, it’s knowing how to use it, understanding the role of light, patience with your models(s), an artistic eye, and most importantly, lots and lots of practice. Note: Em and Dakota (the adorable girl and her Chocolate Lab pictured below) are also pictured in the article.
