While photographing models isn’t the norm for me, I thought it might be fun (and it was). A fellow photographer contacted me a few weeks back about a “meet-up” with several photographers and models at Emerson Point Preserve in Palmetto Florida (just south of the Skyway bridge) where the Manatee River meets the Gulf of Mexico. Having never seen the preserve, I thought it would be a great opportunity to scope out a new outdoor spot AND have some fun with a few other photographers. These meet-ups are great for sharing lighting tips, trying new techniques without the pressure of meeting client expectations, and just moving outside one’s comfort zone. It’s also fun spending time talking shop with other photographers. It’s also a way for me to “kick the tires” with local models that might be needed for editorial shoots. While my regular work doesn’t require bikini clad women, I do sometimes need models that can take direction well and know how to work in front of a camera. Lisa and Mel did a great job and were a pleasure to work with. They were very cooperative and hardly complained as we were all being devoured by biting insects. Seriously, the No-see-ums (biting midges, sand flies, Ceratopogonidae for my more nerdy friends) were plentiful and merciless.

A great time was had by all and I suspect everyone ended up with some great images. I look forward to going back to the preserve just to check out the boardwalk and do some exploring, perhaps along the edges by canoe.
